How much does my computer affect VoIP call quality?
The speed of my Internet is plenty fast but I often have poor call quality. How much will an individual computer which the VoIP call is through affect the call quality?
I’ve went through all of the VoIP tests. I usually pass with flying colors. I use VoIP via the computer because I do a live podcast and I want the best sound quality possibly (closer to radio quality than phone).
If you have decent I/net then it usually not a problem as long as the computer has a reasonable amount of RAM -
You shouldn’t be using VoIP that needs your computer, you should use VoIP that uses its own device (Vonage, ooma, etc.) Call quality of a VoIP call will vary, just like download speed varies, bu location, time of day, day of the week, time of year, etc. (Even the telephone companies have problems on Mother’s Day, their busiest time.) But you should have a connection that’s jitter-free enough to support VoIP (search for voip test – there are a few sites). Speed isn’t enough for VoIP.
