I’ve been researching GPS’s and this is what I found – you can use the GPS right out of the box with no additional fees. If you wantto subscribe to services, like traffic monitoring, they can be bought. If you want to update your GPS with newer maps and the like, you might have to pay a fee to get the updates. So, bottom line, you can have a GPS and not pay any additional fees if you don’t want to.

The satellites of GPS are maintained by the US government. The basic usage of them is absolutely free.

Many GPS devices are free of charge to use. There are some GPS devices that charge monthly/recurring fees to use, but those are different b/c those GPS devices not only receive signals, but also send them as well

^^ I believe that’s what they use for GPS devices that offer real time info while you drive (e.g. there’s a riot going on in NW DC, so it provides you an alternate route along the beltway which may take much longer, but is nothing compared to the standstill traffic of your original route…. or bad weather is causing traffic jam on a highway). Otherwise, also sending signals may be something used moreso by law enforcement and the military. GPS for civilian use used to be quite inferior than what the satelittes the military was on, but that was changed so that civilian population now has greater accuracy and use than before.

If you want optional map updates, there’s a one time fee for everytime u opt for those

Beware, some GPS functionality may require service fees, like Verizon phones with GPS feature. It SHOULD be free, but they charge $1.99 per use or $80/mo as part of it’s unlimited plan
